Year 13 Arrangements

On Friday 8th May, Year 13 students transfer from normal timetable to their Forward Planner. Taught classes in each subject continue until your examination in each subject. It is understood that you will need to negotiate with your teachers when you will be out of class for an examination in another subject or for home revision immediately before an examination in another subject. You need to be ruthlessly honest with yourself, and be at every class you agree with your teacher. Never sacrifice one subject to another.

Once your exams are over in a particular subject you should see your teacher to fill in your summer contract and sign you off. The other commitment you need to fulfil is to complete your end of year review interview with your form teacher. Once you have the signatures of all your subject teachers and your form teacher, you are free to enjoy your summer.

If you get stuck, get help. Don't be mixed up. Personal organisation at this time of year is essential to your success.

Listen out at Monday's assembly for details of your forward planner and your summer contract. Once past 8th May, everyone will be on their own examination timetable, extra classes and revision sessions. The forward planner is the document to use to negotiate with your teachers when you will be in exams, at home revising or in class or revision sessions. Once your last exam is over, you can use your summer contract to sign yourself off with your teachers and head off for an early break. Don't forget that the exam timetable is on the college website. Your personal copy will come to you nearer the time when the exact times have been confirmed.

There are three weeks left of full timetable, and our good luck breakfast for year 14 is on Friday 8th May. A levels begin very early this year, and it is essential that everyone is in every class. Essential learning happens in those three weeks. Remember also: classes will continue after that date, and all students will have a study/class/exam diary to fill in with their teachers so that everyone can plan ahead to organise the perfect mix. Student examination timetables differ wildly, depending on the subjects and boards you take, so make sure your diary is customised for yourself. Aim high - make the most of your time! It's a big investment which will win you the widest range of choices for the rest of your life.

Lots of you are now holding the offer you want, with a good back up. Some of you are still facing a wait. Some of you who didn't feel ready to make an application by the end of January will want to put in a late application. Whatever your situation, don't make a move without checking with Alicia. Not that you don't know your own mind, but UCAS processes are always changing and it would be a sin to give yourself hassle when you need to be concentrating on other things. Plan like stepping stones - don't reject anything until you have a confirmation in your hand of something you want to do more. The few of you who really want to keep your options wide open, keep your focus and aim high. Getting the very best grades will be your best route to opportunities when you decide what you want to do. If you are heading off to try your fortune, set out knowing you've a great set of grades in your pocket.

UCAS Fair for Year 13

This year's UCAS Fair is coming up on 11th March. It's a great time to refocus your goals. Every university in the British Isles will be there. You can either go with an open mind and hoover up prospectuses. Even now that you have done a good bit of research, you will find plenty of courses you had never heard of in subjects and in places that you had never considered. If you already have a good idea of where you would like to go, or what you would like to do, use the opportunity to spend some time at the stall and get to talk to the admissions staff. It can be really useful to ask them about what they like to see on a UCAS form. You still have time to pick up experience before you start on your UCAS form in September.

Look After Your Locks

Staff have had to spend time they shouldn't have had to on mending the locks of the common room doors. Don't let that happen again. No doubt there is only one idiot doing it, but the rest of you need to report them. Cleaning and caretaking staff need out support. Nobody's job should involve mending deliberate damage. This year's 6th form groups have done a good job on maintaining their cleaning rota, and lots of people have chipped in for a bit of extra cleaning when it has been needed. The effort could do with being a bit more even. Do your bit. Don't be a dirty clart, especially with food. Remember you live in a basement and rats will not be far away.

Welcome back from work experience and from half term. Upwards and onwards. Clear the decks for coursework deadlines, so that you never, ever miss a class taking time to complete coursework. Always, always meet the draftwork deadline so that you benefit from the marker's comments. Think ahead to dates for orals, practicals, performances, exhibitions etc. and plan your work to meet the requirements of your own subjects. The timetable for written examinations will be published on the website soon.

Year 14 Inspiration and Dark Days

Year 14 are armed with their mock results and are getting their personal action plans into gear. At this time of year your progress towards your dream may seem very long drawn out. Pace yourself. Investment in thorough and unhurried work at this stage will get the best value out of a bit of panic nearer the exams. This is also the time to take stock of your commitments outside your academic work. Definitely don't cut off your friends, give up the social life and the part time job, but make good decisions with your long term aim in view. Pull back on your hours of part time work if you don't want to stop completely. Think of the next few months as a failsafe investment. If you put in the work now, you will really look forward to mid June - it's not that far away - when you will be free of pressure, happily chilling out on holiday with your best work under your belt. If the prospect of the next few months fills you with panic, DON'T. Come and talk - all the usual suspects will have you as their top priority between now and June. Don't be afraid to ask for a piece of our time.

A Good Experience

Lots more work experience on the horizon. Some are heading off to Spain, and lots of interesting destinations more locally. A few have taken the decision to go at Easter when they can get themselves a more worthwhile placement. The main thing is to pace yourself and make sure that between now and May/June you organise yourself the right mix of academic work towards great grades, a worthwhile work experience, and some rest and relaxation. Aim high, and do the best for yourself.

There have been recent warnings in the press that both universities and employers now check the bebo/MySpace etc. sites of applicants, and have covered the stories of prospective students or employees who have been rejected on the basis of material on their site. When you were young, you probably thought social networking sites were private, and you probably thought that a bit of shock was just normal. It is essential that you check not only your current sites, but any that you had in the past where you may have put something daft which could be taken as offensive. During the years you have been growing up, the law has become progressively stronger in terms of projection for people bullied or humiliated online. Be particularly careful of stuff on your site which may have been meant as a spoof. You won't have a chance to explain if you simply aren't offered a place or offered a job. Take the chance for a spring clean.

Congratulations to all those of you who have received UCAS offers or interviews. Good luck with the interviews. The UCAS final deadline is just about a week away. Supporting those students still working on their application will be Alicia's main priority. Don't waste time worrying or talking yourself out of applying, come and talk about it. Remember that it is important to get your personal statement to your main reference writer, even if it's just a draft. You will get valuable feedback and your reference will be all the better. Remember too that your reference writer needs a couple of days to complete the reference and get it attached to your application. Don't, whatever you do, leave it until the last minute. If you are running into a clash between the UCAS deadline and revision for your module exams, come and talk about it. Putting in the application doesn't mean you can't change your mind later, but missing the deadline leaves you without some of the opportunities you are entitled to.

Anyone who has not yet organised their work experience needs to get on the ball. Talk to Joanne Poland and to Alicia for ideas and contacts. Don't be afraid to split your time if you have two good ideas. It's worth travelling to get to a really good placement. Talk to us if you have travel problems which would get in the way. Don't forget to organise your insurance paperwork well in advance. Don't even think about going somewhere just to put the time in. Work experience is hugely valuable. As well as the experience itself, you may find out what you definitely want to do, or definitely don't want to do. You will also have a really valuable experience to include in your personal statement for UCAS or a job application. Act now!

Work Experience 9th – 13th February 2009

In form class this morning you will have been given information on work experience with a form to fill in. Please complete this as soon as possible. The deadline for completion is the 12th December. Return it to the box on Alicia's desk labelled work experience and she can get cracking on helping to arrange you a worthwhile placement.

Once she has deciphered the information you have supplied her on the form, she will arrange the placement with you via your school email account, so it is vital that you check your school email account every day. It only takes a minute. Just click on it from the start menu after you have logged on. I find it a really quick, easy and efficient way of communicating with everyone in the Shimna community. Once you get into the habit of doing it you will find that it makes life so much easier. Contact Peter if you have any difficulty accessing/using your email account. Upwards and onwards, year 14, towards getting your UCAS application in. The sooner you do, the sooner you will hear back. Don't underestimate the time it takes to push references and personal statement drafts among all the people who need to read check them before your application is ready to go.

Carson Bursary Opportunity

The Carson Bursary is open only to 6th Form students and the new deadline is 28th November. The Bursary is a good opportunity for a real achievement for your curriculum vitae, as well as an opportunity to make a statement about integration in a creative form. Have a look at the flier and application form to find out what to do. Time is short, but there is still time enough to do something really good. Several bursaries are available, and are worth £1,000 each. This could be a really valuable start to your college fund! (or a whole lot of other possibilities I'm sure you could think of!) Any creative medium is acceptable - art, drama, media, poetry...

Best Use of Study

The main use of study is of course to get your work done for your A level courses. Each A level course consists of five/six hours of class AND your study and homework hours. Other things you need to be doing in study are: year 14 - completing your UCAS research, personal statement and application' year 13 researching and organising your work experience; investing in enrichment activities to boost your life and your applications, eg. RSA keyboarding, volunteering with younger students, volunteering to plant bulbs for the Wildlife Group, volunteering for something else you see that needs to be done. If there is anything else you would like to take a short course in, ask. Reading, the library is full of books and the week's magazines are there to be used. Don't underestimate the power of expanding your mind through reading books, magazines and newspapers. Especially if you have a long stretch of study within one day, it is essential to plan how you will use it to give yourself some variety and added value.

This week sees the repeat examinations for GCSE English. Good luck to those taking the examination. Remember that Paper 1 requires a clear head, detailed answers and excellent expression. Make sure you have a text book to look over the night before to remind yourself of the kind of things the mark scheme is looking for. Next week's Paper 2 is the one you need to revise for, Poetry from Other Cultures. Make sure you read, read and read the poems again in your anthology, Cluster One OR Cluster Two. Good revision materials for both papers are available on BBC BiteSize. Anyone who needs to resit for June, MUST make a solid arrangement for revision work/repeat coursework with Grainne Tobin. Remember that success in repeats means that YOU have to commit the time to improve the grade.

First Successful UCAS Offer

It's always great when the first successful UCAS offer comes in, and this year, I got the news at the formal. It's Bronagh this year, who has received an offer from Liverpool University to study Economics and Economic History. Yo! Now she may or may not of course decide to study this course in Liverpool, but it's a fantastic feeling to know you've got one offer in the bag. Best of luck to everyone else who has already sent their UCAS form in. Inspirations to everyone still working on their form. The sooner you get your form in, the sooner you will start to hear back from the universities you have applied to. If you are still stuck in your research, scream for help!

Yr 13 Work Experience

Lots of you have your arrangements underway. It's time now for everyone to get a move on. Branch out! Plan a work experience in a career area you normally have no access to. Plan a placement you need to travel to. Alicia has contacts with placements in all sorts of career areas. It is really important to book yourself a place as early as possible. The actual procedures are quite straightforward, but each step along the way takes time. Remember that when you are asking for a work placement, you are asking a favour. The more interesting the placement, the busier the staff will be, and the earlier you need to make contact and start putting the insurance arrangements in place.

Today, (well I mean Monday) the first UCAS forms have been sealed and sent off to arrive in time for the 15th October deadline. Everyone else now needs to get the balance right. The sooner you have your application in, the sooner universities can consider you for a place. However, and this is where balance comes in, you need to take all the time you need to ensure that you have applied for courses you would like to study, in places you would like to live, and with a variety of entry requirements so that you will be able to decide on a firm choice and a back up once you have all your offers in.

Everyone but the Five

If you have stalled on your UCAS research, start by looking back at the work you did during induction week. Get browsing in all the prospectuses you can find, either in print or online. Don't hesitate to ask any university to send you your own prospectus. They will be glad to. If you have some starting points - either you know what you want to study, or you know where you want to study - ask Alicia Rooney or Ellen McVea for ideas about prospectuses to look up. You are aiming to find a range of choices that will mean you will definitely have a place on a course you will enjoy in a place you will look forward to living. Much later in the process you will be narrowing down your choice to one firm choice and one back up. It is important that you have a back up choice which is asking for lower grades than your firm choice. Wherever you are at in the process, get browsing and asking! After 15th, there will be interview slots available for anyone who wants a chance to talk through what they should do next to help decide.

Five of you need to get your forms submitted to UCAS by Wednesday 15th October, and I know you have all sorted out your university choices.
